In this blog post, we’ll provide a sample 1-day itinerary that covers both the back road and the national park, allowing you to experience the best of Maui’s natural wonders in just one day. Get ready to embark on an unforgettable road trip through the picturesque landscapes of Maui.
Start Early: Start your day early as there’s a lot to cover. Leave by 6:30 AM if possible, to make the most of daylight.
The Road to Hana: Begin your journey by taking the Hana Highway, which is a scenic drive that takes you through some of the most beautiful scenery on the island. You’ll find yourself stopping multiple times to take pictures of the breathtaking views.
Breakfast in Paia: Before starting your journey, stop in Paia town to grab breakfast at a local cafe. You can’t go wrong with the delicious options in Paia. A great option is Anthony’s Coffee Co. which normally opens at 5:30am. They serve up delicious coffee drinks, smoothies, and baked goods, and have a laid-back, friendly atmosphere.
Twin Falls: As you head out of town, stop by the Twin Falls for a quick dip in the waterfalls. Make sure to carry a change of clothes!
Kaupo Store: As you drive through the back road, stop by the Kaupo Store for some refreshments and a chance to stretch your legs. The store is a popular spot among locals and tourists alike.
Wai’anapanapa State Park: This park is located near Hana town and is known for its black sand beaches, sea caves, and blowholes. Take a dip in the ocean or explore the caves before heading to the next destination.
Town of Hana:
The Back Road to Hana: This route is less traveled, but it offers some of the most stunning views of the island.
Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park: This area of the national park is located past Hana town and offers some of the most scenic views on the island. Take a short hike to see the famous Seven Sacred Pools and the bamboo forest.
Two options for sunset:
Sunset at Haleakala Summit: Finally, end your day at the summit of Haleakala, the highest point on the island. Enjoy the stunning sunset and the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Sunset at Ocean Vodka Distillery (Our Personal Choice): The Ocean Vodka Organic Farm and Distillery is a family-owned and operated distillery located in Kula, Maui, just off the Hana Highway. They produce organic vodka and rum using deep ocean mineral water and organic sugarcane grown on their own 80-acre farm. The distillery offers tours of their organic farm and gardens, and tastings in a room with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. We loved ending our crazy day with amazing food and an unforgettable sunset!
